Sharm el Sheikh International airport is located around
22 km of the city center (20 minutes drive). The
airport is operated by the Egyptian Holding Company for
Airports and Air Navigation and handling over 7 million
passengers every year (7,430,940 passengers in 2009). Sharm
El Sheikh airport was originally an air force base since
1968 during Israeli occupation of Sinai until it was handed
to Egypt in 1979 after the camp David peace treaty, it was
converted to a civilian airport.

there are 2 terminals at the airport and a third one is to
be built soon in order to the increased number of passengers
flying to Sharm El Sheikh. The current airport annual
capacity is 8,000,000 passengers which will jump to
15,000,000 when terminal 3 is in existence. The main
terminal of Sharm El Sheikh airport (Terminal 1) features:

- 8 gates (2 domestic and 6 international gates).
- Parking area can accommodate 250 cars and 100 buses.
